You want to work at home but would like to avoid high startup costs. You’re also not sure of embarking on a creative vocation. On the other hand, the phrase ‘neat and tidy’ does justice to your personality. What do you do? Think about a house cleaning service. If you’re one of those obsessive compulsive people, then this sort of business won’t feel like work at all!

Do you have doubts? Think there is no market for this type of work? Starting a home based operation is a few steps away from a fully fledged janitorial service. The experience is very good for future reference, if you are interested in this line of work. Cleaning is an essential service, be it for offices, factories or homes. Women hardly have time to clean their own homes anymore, as they are busy with work or with their families. Even if they did have time, cleaning is not what they’d want to spend their free time on. Having a cleaner come over and take care of things is a huge relief.

According to recent reports, the cleaning industry is a fast growing component of the American economy. The highest demand comes from residential cleaning. Even the office cleaning segment is a multi million dollar industry.

What do you need to get started?

As indicated right at the beginning, start up costs are very low for a home based cleaning service. The supplies or equipment you need would be: cleaning detergents, rags, mops, a long handled duster, a broom and a polisher and a vacuum. Any other equipment can be rented or maybe your client will provide them for you.

How to break into the market
You need to know where to be, to get offers. Try these methods to improve your visibility among targeted clientele:

1) Word of mouth- your friends, relatives and family can spread the word quite efficiently. They will vouch that you don’t miss a spot when it comes to cleaning. This form of personal recommendation can help you a great deal.

2) Flyers and brochures- these will work anywhere. Go around the neighborhood; give some flyers to restaurants, schools, offices, as well as to individuals. If you hope to specialize, target that specific crowd. People won’t need to be persuaded to enlist the help of experts when it comes to cleaning, so by covering a wide radius with your information, you’ll get a good many calls.

3) Classified ads- the local newspaper must be included in your advertising strategy. Try few papers at once and advertise several times to get results. Before you create your ad, check out those posted by your competitors, so that you can do better.
