Yes, it is tough to actually love one’s self because there is always room for improvement; but that the whole point of being human! The challenge in learning to love is to love ourselves, good and bad. By loving yourself, you can easily open yourself and be ready to love others. This applies to all relationships.
Often people, especially couples, tend to actually put the cart before the horse. Have you often heard yourself saying that you will start to love yourself and take care of yourself and enjoy your life when you find the right person to love you? Or maybe you always tell yourself that you want to be with someone who has a lot of self-confidence, is good looking, smart and of course fun to be around with. Doesn’t this picture look realistic but far from perfect?
Many people have long lists of characteristics which they want to see in their “to-be-better-half.” However, many fail to realize that they are missing all the characteristics which they should have to pair up with such “dream spouses.” If you want someone to be kind, generous, fit and loving, it has to start from you: you have to be kind, generous, fit and loving too! Do not try to change your expectations, instead change yourself.
Tell yourself all the wonderful things that you want in a good relationship with your parents, kids or even spouse. Mentally put a “tick” next to all the things that you are reciprocating already. Do you want someone who is loving; how loving are you? Do you want someone who is fun; how fun are you? Start working on all those areas where you are falling behind. Change does not happen overnight.
Remember that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step; make that one step now by learning to love.
