Here are five things you can do to get your work done and have a great holiday season.

1. Get up earlier. I know, that alarm clock already goes off way too soon. But, if you get up even 30 minutes earlier, you can get your day started and get more accomplished sooner. This will allow time in the middle or end of your day to take in the sites, get some shopping done, or just sit and enjoy your décor.

2. Attack your to-do list right away. As soon as you sit down at your desk, start ticking things off of your list. Check your e-mail later in the morning. This time of year, you're going to be getting notices of sales from your favorite web sites and stores, invitations and stories with a holiday theme. It is so easy to get lost in all of that... ask me how I know.

If you start working right away and save e-mail for later, you'll accomplish more earlier in your day. Also, don't leave your e-mail open during the day. It's too easy to see the e-mail alert. Only open your e-mail during set times. Check it 3 or 4 times per day, take care of what needs to be done and then leave the fun stuff for after your work is complete.

It is an administration characterised by excessive red tape and routine. This impedes effective action, slows down decision-making and adds unnecessary layers of costs. Bureaucracy is sometimes described as the tail wagging the dog and is a parasite to productivity. It is also like the millstone around ones neck, limiting mobility.

Most of the large organisations have some form of bureaucracy. It is a given, inherent structure created largely by Alfred P. Sloan, who became president and CEO of General Motors (GM) in 1923. He recognised the need for coherence and unifying order when he confronted GM, a sprawling corporation that was in dire need of organisation. It was Sloan who transformed GMs loosely configured, far-flung divisions into a coherent corporation. But while that organisational form worked well for many years, it had begun to become too restrictive as business became more demanding and more global in the 1980s.

Jack Welch told his people to fight it, kick it. Welch fought a two-decade war against bureaucracy with initiatives like  boundaryless and Work-Out. GEs list of values specifically addressed the companys intolerance for bureaucracy and it was at the top of this list for many years. Welch recognised the adverse effects of bureaucracy and knew that unless he rid the organisation of the worst of it, GE would never become a legitimate global competitor. No one should be billing themselves as stupid. After all you are operating in a very high-paced world, handling multiple demands on your time, and still producing good work. Yet if you are operating in this mode and are feeling stressed and unproductive because your ToDo list and daily stacks keep growing, then you may be exemplifying that definition.

Are you using the same techniques that you used last year and four years ago to manage your phone calls, your email, and your long-term projects? If you are, chances are that is the reason you are having to cope with stress each day. An increased pace at work along with new technology demands that you have a method for integrating changes.

In my consulting work, as I assess office productivity, I might find that one person is using four or five different systems to manage their daily tasks. That person might have learned of a new system but still kept parts of the older one instead of transitioning everything. The end result is that, with multiple systems, none of them works.

The first thing is to determine which ONE system in each area would produce the most efficient results. The system can be paper-based or electronic-based. Deciding which depends on both your comfort level with electronics and the format of the information that is coming into your work area.

Below are some evaluation questions to use in determining whether or not an area needs to be examined so you can improve daily productivity.

*Email processing--Do you empty your inbox at least once a week?
*Paper processing--Do you leave your office each evening with a cleared desk?
*Filing--Can you find any item within seconds?

Unfortunately you do not often have the opportunity to make a fresh start each year as children do. Instead you tend to keep on accumulating more and more year after year without the chance to clear out your space at the end of a term.

Make your subject line convey the most vital information in about six to eight words. To assign an email to a category, right click on the email, right click categories, find the category you want to assign it to, and put an x in that box

2) Use tasks to group your &amp;quot;to do&amp;quot; items Items that I will do in the next few days, weeks, or months ahead, you can move to your task folder.

If you customize the current view to group it by high, normal, and low priority it helps you instantly identify which items need your attention first. It follows the Franklin Covey model of thinking of identifying tasks as a A, B, or C.

Do you instantly go and read new email when you hear that alert go?

Emails can be a great time waster and provide a constant distraction throughout the day. If you're going to make the most of your day then one way to increase your productivity is to limit the amount of time you spend on emails.

- Set your email system to only check periodically or disconnect yourself from the internet except when you want to download emails. - In Outlook Express - Tools - Options - General - In Outlook - Tools - Options - Mail Delivery.

- Switch off the email notification in your mail system, such as alerts and pop-ups so you don't get distracted throughout the day and change the Checking time to 120/180 minutes.

- Only check your emails periodically through the day. Let's say first thing, late morning and again in the afternoon. Don't jump straight in and start responding to the first one. Take a few minutes to sort them into urgent/action, non-urgent and reading.

- If you need to spend time responding to emails, set aside time in your schedule to do that and limit the amount of time you spend. Either limit yourself to 30 minutes at a time or work to clear the existing action emails for as long as it takes (within reason!) without addressing any new emails. Leave those until next time

- Subscribe only to mailing lists and newsletters that you will read or use on a regular basis. Go through every few months and clear out and unsubscribe from what you no longer read. Many sites, including mine, will provide an archive of past newsletters.

- Use filters to organise incoming mail into different folders. These can be based on the sender or subject, so that mail automatically gets diverted into a specific folder and doesn't clog up your inbox.
